What is happening to the unions? The mechanics at Northwest are all but forgotten, they can't get any backing by any one. Every one just walks right on by the picketers as if they weren't there. I know in this particular case they are reaping what they sowed some five or so years ago when they broke with the union that represents the ground workers, so they can't expect them to support them after they are the ones to weaken the unions at Northwest.

But what about the other union airlines, why aren't they supporting the mechanics by striking against their carriers, I'm sure if the whole industry shut down that Management would sit up and listen. Sadly that is not the way unions operate today, its the old "I have mine-you get your own" no more standing together to be strong, just a bunch of divided organizations that big business can pick off one by one.

I think we ended up here because of lack of leadership in the progressive party. You can't articulate a message when you really don't have one. Except for being against everything. People want leaders who do things that aren't popular, but are good for the future of America. John Kerry is the perfect example, we can tell you what he's against but who could say what he stood for?

Beside the party line rhetoric that has to be said year in and year out even though nothing is ever done about any of the so called progressive core values. I really think America is fed up with progressives being against everything whether its good for America or not and not coming up with solutions of their own. Its easy to just say "get the troops out of Iraq" but most Americans know that it is not realistic to do that at this point. Hell we're not even out of the former Yugoslavia yet, progressives must pick their fights better, or else it comes off as whining.

The main thing is that there has to be a clear message not one from the far left and one from the middle it has to be either or, and not be afraid to state it.

How did we get here?

The conservative coalition has been working on their program in a very quiet, non-violent,
non-provocative way.  Now they have elected a president to represent their views.

If you don't like that, you should learn from them and do the same, only better.

Over 20 years ago, the conservatives decided that bombing abortion clinics was counterproductive. Electing officials and judges that would close the clinics became the new goal.

Over the past 20 years the conservatives have acquired ever-increasing levels of responsibility.
They took control one little piece at a time.  Always smiling...always shaking your hand.

If you disagree with their message, you can confront them head on, or you can work against them
from the grass roots on up.   Vote and get your friends to vote.  Run for office and get your friends
elected to office.  Get your message heard by others. Speak at luncheons for Rotary, Kiwanis,
chamber of commerce, local church, synagogue, mosque, etc.  Get others to speak your message.

Do what you can, however little that might seem.  Tell others.  Create the buzz that gets others going.

The longest journey proceeds one step at a time.

You could be the first step in your family/neighborhood/town/township/county/ state...

I can’t begin to imagine what life must be like for all those desperate people trapped in New Orleans.  I have visited the city twice and have some feeling for how vast this city is.  Words can not describe how I feel right now.  This is a horrible, terrible, disgusting, and frightening travesty.  Is this America?  What is happening to our country?

Where is the leadership?  Local officials are begging for help.  The governor of Louisiana responds to disorder and “looting” by ordering police to “shoot to kill.”  Where is the food?  I have a wife and two young children.  If they were starving, I would do anything to feed them.  Meanwhile, our president responds by breaking off his vacation and holding a press conference.

After Pearl harbor FDR famously said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself” and he inspired confidence.  That was leadership.  Today, we get empty words, and incompetence.  Will anyone be held accountable for cutting the levy repair budget, gutting FEMA, deploying 1/3 of our National Guard troops Overseas, and vacationing during one of the worst natural disasters in history?  Sadly, I suspect the answer is NO!!!

Imagine this happening in Detroit.  Remember how badly the black-out disrupted our lives a couple years ago.  Will we be prepared?  Will we have enough National Guards?  Is Michigan prepared?  Do we have enough money at the state and local level to deal with a major catastrophic event?  Is there any plan in place for evacuations, other than drive away and take your credit cards?  These questions need to be answered and this needs to become a priority.

The website looks great! I like the american flag, FoxNews look.

Also an interesting quote from the Koran that I may have partially right:
"In the eyes of God we are all servants of each other." This is an
interesting parallel to Jefferson's statement.

Why are we in Iraq, but not in Korea?  Why are all of our domestic jobs being outsourced to countries that
have been considered bitter enemies in the past?  What gives America the authority to police every other nation?

These questions have plagued many of us, and long before 9/11/2001. From the moment the phrase
"...New World Order..." hit the press, there's been a clamor of activity to make sense of what's really
happening beyond the surface issues on the local TV news.  To some, it's just a sign of the times.

To others, it's a time of Golden Opportunities created by the chaos of uncertainty.  Remember the flurry of
activity generated by Y2K fears? The senseless hording of goods and supplies to "weather-out" a major
catastrophe created by computer outages that never happened was just a prelude to a much more
comprehensive program of dis-information, subversion, and self-sabotage to be implemented by secret
"quasi-government" entities who've charged themselves with facilitating the reality of this New World Order.

Most people would look at Michael Moore as an adolescent prankster if they new how serious the
"threat" to our national sovereignty really was today.

08-23-2005         Subject:  Why are we in Iraq?              Submitted by:  Cheers!

This is a thought provoking question. There are many schools of thought on this question and many
of those involve biases, both from the conservative right and the liberal left. I must admit that I have a
bias as well since I actually have been there and may return in the future. Preface aside, here's my answer to this question: In 2001, Amnesty International issued a report on the actions (I am biased in calling them "atrocities")  of Saddam Hussein - see http://www.cspan.org/resources/pdf/iraqdecade.pdf

To me, it was clear that Saddam defied the diplomacy of the United Nations and the actions/threat of
coalition forces in the first Gulf War. To me, Saddam was a threat to his own populace; just ask any Kurd or
Iraqi Shiite Muslim you know. Also ask any Kuwaiti or Saudi Arabian who was in their country at the time of
the Iraqi invasion. This report also documents the potential for existence of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in Saddam's arsenal. To me, Saddam's threat extended far beyond the Iraqi borders. Of course, we now know that Saddam's WMD research fell short of reality. The world did not definitively know this in March 2003.  Coalition forces acted on threat intelligence and Saddam's sabre-rattling known at the time. But, I digress; this is another issue.

Based on the history and actions of Saddam, coupled with the potential future threat against humanity
(including the United States), I feel that we did the right thing in removing Saddam from power. Removing
Saddam from power has proven to ease the threat from his arsenal, prevented his research and development and production of WMD.  I also believe that the timing was right, perhaps overdue, in that the battle took place in Iraq, Saddam's turf, rather than in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, London, Rome or anywhere else in the world.

War is difficult notion to comprehend. It usually means the failure of diplomacy. It also means destruction
and killing to achieve peace. Diplomacy fails when one or more parties in dispute use negotiations to achieve greater power, as proven by Hitler and Kaiser Wilhelm and, unfortunately, Saddam Hussein. Like most soldiers, I do not like war. In March 2003, coalition nations, learned from history prevented potential destruction and genocide world wide.

I am aware of those who state that another reason for us being in Iraq is for the oil reserves. Have those
pumped gas lately?  I am heartened by the successes in Iraq since March 2003: Iraqis enjoying free speech; squabbling over a constitution; rebuilding commerce without fear of shakedowns; Iraqis thanking me for being there, as if I had anything to do with the liberation from Saddam (I didn't do anything by myself).

I am saddened by the price we are paying for the logical follow-up question to "Why are we in Iraq" - Why
are we still in Iraq? Although peace has returned to most of Iraq, it has not returned to all of Iraq.  Again, this is another issue for discussion and thought.

I have my opinions on the answer to "Why are we still in Iraq?" Some I like, some I don't. I encourage
anyone who has honored me by reading thus far to submit his/her answer to this question.
