Dubai Port World – An American Security Risk???

The recent buzz about the acquisition of P&O by a Dubai company has centered on the perception of risk and the impression that a company from UAE cannot be counted on to support American anti-terrorism efforts. As much as I dislike to politics of the Bush administration, they are, at first glance, bang on in their approach. The precedent has already been set. The US does not have any requirements put forth by legislation that limits US port operations to American companies. The fact that P&O is a British company does not guarantee that the company is fully behind US anti-terrorism programs. They are, like any other corporation, driven by profit. DP World is a UAE company, but this doesn’t imply that the company supports anything other than its own profit. Without enacting legislation to ban foreign-operated corporations from running US ports, we cannot ban DP World from US port operations.

That said, the issue of this acquisition has implications well beyond security. Look at who the players are who are profiting from DP World and their association with President Bush. The New York Daily News has provided details (http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/393375p-333478c.html). John Snow is Bush’s Treasury Secretary and was responsible for signing off on the sale of P&O to DP World. Shortly after leaving CSX to join Bush’s cabinet, CSX Railroad sold its port operations to DP World for $1.15 billion. David Sanborn, who was just nominated to head the U.S. Maritime Administration, currently runs DP World's European and Latin American operations. These links to DP World and the secrecy in which the Bush administration has operated suggests (strongly, in my opinion) that the Administration preferred not to have the details of these relationships made public.

It makes you wonder who really is profiting from these transactions!!!

  • Great research Willis. I have not heard anyone in the American media pick up this angle.

  • If you claim invading Iraq over non-existant WMD's and tapping the phones of American's without due process and tracking American searches in Google are all pefectly valid ways to protect the US from terrorism then how can you justify letting a country associated with Terrorism have anything to do with our ports. In my opinion it is all about making a buck and has little to do with anything else.

  • Willis,
i have to agre with REB84, great research! I too haven't heard any of the socalled mainstream media do any actual research on this issue, which has been in the news since I think around Thanksgiving of last year. they really only want to incite fear, by saying "Arab country" and border. It really is sad that they feed the American public soundbites and don't do what you did, give cold hard facts. I don't think there is a single American country that runs any of our ports. I do know that American longshoreman still work the docks and Americans still do the inspections, and that won't change no matter who owns or runs the ports. Like you said, these companies are motivated by profit. And they should be, like any other business operating in our country. I may be naive but I can't imagine a company spending 6+billion dollars to export terrorism and lose all that money when we know there are easier ways to target America than through our ports.
    Great job Willis.

  • This whole think is wierd...and I thought that the USCG and the customs department were in charge of security at the ports...but what do I know?

    I know one thing

Someone stands to Make LOTS OF MONEY ON THIS DEAL!!

That's why it won't go away...

  • Yes, Cal as in most things with power politics it is best to follow the money if one wants to understand motivations. If anything good comes out of this deal it will be that Americans may wake up to the need for improved port security, and how much foreign investment we need to keep out country in business.

BTW, the port in the picture is the Dubai port.
