Propaganda vs. Rights of Man

The Republicans under Karl Rove and Frank Luntz, their prime wordsmith and focus group guru, once again have taken the initiative in framing the Hamdan vs. Rumsfeld argument, using a turn of a phrase and making it mean something else.

Take "Special Privilege" for example. In the decision, "Hamdan vs. Rumfield" decision Justice Kennedy did not say "Special Privilege". He said "Special PROTECTIONS", not "Special Privileges". By taking the legal concept of protected rights, even for a charged terrorist, the Republican position is that terrorists, alleged terrorists, and anyone else the administration decides may be a terrorist, with a continuously broadening definition of terrorist, have no rights. No Rights of Man, which our Revolutionary forefathers risked their lives and treasure for.

The Republicans position is that an entire class of human beings do not have the rights of man, they do not have the right to be charged and tried for their crimes or alleged crimes, and that they can be held indefinitely without charge, without identification to the families, without access to basic humanitarian protections of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent.

The Republican position is that the Laws of War, the humane treatment of POW's, the Geneva Conventions intended to establish ground rules for war, including not shooting non-combatants, not using chemical weapons including napalm, not to use torture as a means of extracting information, and a whole host of other humanitarian protections for ALL combatants.

The Republican position is that they have no problem with violating the Rights of Man.

Now we witness the propaganda aspect of this turn of the phrase. As
Rep. John Conyers points out this phrase "Special Privileges" is out to all of the right wing propaganda outlets, right wing radio, right wing cable TV, right wing press outlets, and right wing blogs. Thus, this two word phrase is out to the world on maybe 10,000 channels, effectively carpet bombing America with that message, painting the Democrats as weak on terrorism, when exactly the opposite is true.

Next, the phrase "pre-9/11 vs. post-9/11 mindset" while a little long for the two word attention span of many Americans, is another example of the channeling of another phrase that frames the Democrats in a way that they are not.

As Justice Kennedy alluded to, and also, the pre-9/11 mentality stood for observance of the Rights of Man, proper observance of legal due process, rules of evidence, Habeas Corpus, charges and the right to a speedy trial by jury, protection of the rights described by the Bill of Rights.

The Republican position is that in their radical view, the fear of terrorism and the promulgation of the politics of fear and smear justify any usurpation of American's freedoms from government intrusion into any aspect of our lives that they feel is somehow even obliquely related to terrorism.

Terrorism and the fear of it, which is widely dispersed by the Fear-Monger-in-Chief, the Vice-Fear-Monger-in-Chief and their political operatives and their outsourced Propaganda Ministry (Right wing Radio, TV, Print and Internet), is the official policy of the Republican Party and its President. (Sorry for the long subordinate clause.)

I have been studying propaganda for several years, and this technique was developed during World War I! There is nothing new in what the Republicans are doing. If you can stand to read 8 pages of what I have written, I have prepared a summary of the war propaganda process and have published it on the QuestionItNow blog. Here is a link: How to Sell A War

The reason I feel that the war analogy for is appropriate here is that the Republicans are looking at this election as all-out war on Democrats, our democratic political system, the Constitution, our freedoms, which were bought with the blood of one million dead soldiers, and 30 or 40 million soldiers who served.

That is the Republicans, led by their evil political director, Mr. Karl Rove have declared War on America, and they will stop at nothing until they have achieved the total subjection of our Freedom, our Constitution which is the only thing between our freedom and a tyrannical government, our right to privacy, the legitimacy of our government, to break down the wall between Church and State, to destroy Public Education in America, to allow the polluters to destroy our environment to line their pockets.

As usual, my list is too short, but in the interest of having anyone read this post, I will stop it here.

FYI, two Bloggers from ConyersBlog , Sanity Sojourner and Tahoebasha1 helped with editing "How to Sell A War." Both improved the finished product.

  • They did a great job!

  • this is all still heating up! We have a lot of war to sell because I continue to say this mess is just starting!
Lebanon, the most recent Addition to Bush's Successful Middle East (dis)Order!
Iraq, Iran, Syria Palestine, Egypt? now Lebanon, what next? it's spreading! Middle East breakdown well on its way!

To explain the increase in sectarian retribution killings in Iraq Gen. George Casey, at a joint news conference with Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, told reporters that al-Qaida is carrying out terrorist killings in the Baghdad area in an attempt to "demonstrate that they are still relevant" after the June 7 killing of their leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
`What we are seeing now as a counter to that is death squads, primarily from Shiite extremist groups that are retaliating against civilians," Casey said. "
you have both sides now attacking civilians, and that is what has caused the recent spike in violence here in Baghdad. http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

This Iraqi breakdown is self perpetuating and will not stop. My concern is that Saudi Arabia who looks at itself as the protector of Sunni's will intervene and Iran will help the Shiites as seems to be happening
What should wake you up is that Iraq's PM Maliki said that a loss of the Iraq war would be a loss of the country of Iraq.
I hate to be the one to tell him but Iraq is already lost. It is in civil war and that cannot be stopped now. It is now in proccess. As I have said many times, it will and is spreading throughout the entire middle east. You can thank Bush and his new world order!
    http://www.dailykos.com/....

While pressing Iran to provide a response to the international package prior to the much anticipated summit in St Petersburg, the US government has preemptively rejected the middle-of-the-road option of putting Iran's enrichment program on standby while the talks continue. http://www.atimes.com/...

While continuing to insist on a halt to uranium enrichment that they know Iran will not do, Bush continue's to brag about multi lateral negotiations which for Bush is no negotiation at all but a continuation of my way or nothing policies while Iran continues to buy time.

*Now Israeli tanks and troops invaded southern Lebanon today amid a series of military disasters for the government in Jerusalem after Hizbullah captured two soldiers and killed several others - compounding a political crisis over an abducted soldier held in Gaza. The Israeli air force killed a family of nine, including seven children, in a large bomb attack on a Gaza City house.
Hizbullah's capture of the two soldiers is a huge political embarrassment to the Israeli prime minister, coming after the seizure of Cpl Shalit last month. Mr Olmert has been pursuing a drawn-out strategy to win the release of Cpl Shalit - who is held by Hamas's military wing and other groups - and to end Palestinian rocket attacks. He has initiated a series of assaults on the Gaza Strip, put Gaza's 1.4m residents under pressure with the destruction of the only power station and other infrastructure, and arrested members of the Hamas-controlled Palestinian government and MPs.

I continue to say, Israel will no more succeed at their recent endeavors than Bush will in his. Israel and Bush continue to just make things worse for themselves. Besides believing they are the chosen ones you have to wonder why they seem to seek destruction!
Last Wednesday, Israeli jets buzzed the home of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Ladekye, outside Damascus. Israeli television reported that the president was at home at the time.
Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres complained that Syria allowed the exiled Hamas political leader Khalid Meshaal -- operating out of Damascus -- to order the kidnapping of the Israeli corporal.

The flyover was seen as an attempt to bring pressure on al-Assad to rein in Meshaal.

Syrian state television called the Israeli flyover "an unacceptable, hostile and provocative act." Syria said its anti-aircraft batteries fired on the Israeli warplanes and chased them away.

This was Fridays contribution to the breakdown of Bush's new world order!
Anger flared across the Middle East over Israel's assault, and many Arabs criticized their governments for not aiding the Palestinians.
The Egyptian government's top rival, the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, urged Egyptians to gather at pro-Palestinian demonstrations Friday, the Muslim Sabbath. please read the link!

    * We are getting deeper. The middle east breakdown that many of us saw as a result if Bush attacked Iraq is well on its way. This new world order of Bush's is a great success huh! It will soon get worse! Please give me your thoughts! Reb, I tried to join Conyers Blog Saturday but I am still waiting for their acceptance.

  • Listen here peoples...
I live in the Peoples Republic of Maryland. Our state has been dominated by Democrats for the last 50 years...
I assure you. It's not what you're looking for. Our state consistantly ranks in the bottom 5 of quality of legislatures. The answer (as I have always stated) Is not name calling and pointing fingers. What we truely need is an overhaul of ALL politicos. Throw the bums out is what I say. Re-elect...NO ONE! (Go Tony!)If you had to wade through the feces of The Maryland Senate President making an 11th hour deal with a power company so that EVERYONE who has to deal with the BGE monopoly gets to pay them an additional $2.50 per month for the next 10 years to make up for a supposed cost reduction for the next 9 months...and the crap of laws legislated to protect big businesses who contribute and penalize those who don't...I can go on...
    ALL DEMS!

Quit being cheap and making it one party versus another...It's not the real deal.

The real deal is corruption on both sides of the floor

  • Cal,

I don't agree with throw everyone out. Some politicians actually do a half-way decent job.

I completely agree that corruption is part of the American political process. However, the republicans control the U.S. government and I firmly believe it is time to bring our government into some sort of balance.

By Blogger REB 84, at 9:57 AM, July 21, 2006

  • Yeah but we had the same issues when the Dems had control as well. We need change and Term Limits.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:25 PM, July 21, 2006

  • Term Limits - Unconstitutional. SCOTUS when states attempted to put term limits on congressmen from their own states.

We voters can impose term limits.

Oh, by the way, when Newt came in, with his Contract With America, all Repubican Congressmen with two exceptions agreed to limit their terms to 12 years on a voluntary basis. The American people need to enforce this contract.

    By Blogger Ohiodem1, at 2:09 PM, July 21, 2006

  • Agreed...
Don't you see that this is not an Us vs Them...
It's an Us vs Us in that it is OUR responsibility to make change not some political party. You can't blame all of our problems on the Republicans or the Democrats. We must take the blame ourselves because it is OUR system and OUR government...Not the D's or the R's. We need a balance of GOOD leadership. In Maryland we what many Dems wish...a Dem control for 50 years...take a look at our test scores in the cities (worst in the nation) and the crime rates...(some of the highest in the nation). Irresponsible bankrupt school systems...all lead and run by Democrats. We currently have a Centrist Republican Governor (the first in 45 years) who can't pass any meaningful legislation or veto any poor legislation because of Democratic stone walling. That's why I vote for leadership...not political party...

  • Cal,

I posted on this topic at QuestionItNow - Will America Lead?

    "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely"

I suspect almost everyone is familiar with the quote, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." I also suspect that most people have no idea who uttered these famous words. Lord Acton (1834-1902) brought a unique international perspective to questions of power and morality to Europe during the height of the British Empire.

Following is this great quote in deeper context. "Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end...liberty is the only object which benefits all alike, and provokes no sincere opposition...The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to to govern. Every class is unfit to govern...Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

These words were inspired by deep historical research illustrated by the following testimony. "His estate at Cannes (France) had more than 3,000 books and manuscripts; his estate at Tegernsee (Bavaria), some 4,000; and Aldenham (Shropshire, England), almost 60,000. He marked thousands of passages he considered important." - www.libertystory.net

Amazingly, Lord Acton was self-taught having not even received a high-school diploma. However he was awarded multiple honorary doctorates. America will be well served to listen to his timeless words. Who will emerge to ask the tough questions and speak truth to power?
